If you’re looking for an alternative to the espresso martini and you love matcha, this coconut matcha martini is the perfect drink for you!
Legend has it that the espresso martini was created when a young model walked into a London bar in the late 80s and asked for a drink that would “wake me up then f*ck me up”. Some accounts say the model in question was Kate Moss, others say it was Naomi Campbell, but one thing’s for sure: this iconic drink can be accredited to the legendary London bartender, Dick Braswell.
Espresso martinis are as popular as in 2025 (maybe even more so thanks to Sabrina Carpenter’s recent hit), but matcha has also gained massive momentum as wellness-conscious individuals look for healthier alternatives to coffee. Packed with antioxidants and brain-boosting compounds like anxiety-reducing L-theanine, matcha fills a gap in the daily caffeinated drinks department. But what about alcoholic drinks?

Enter, the Matcha-tini.
This coconut matcha martini takes all the energizing appeal of a coffee cocktail, but adds a fresh, earthy twist. The matcha offers a gentle, sustained buzz — no jittery crash — while coconut water and lemon juice add a zesty, tropical brightness that keeps the drink light and refreshing. I was genuinely surprised by how good this drink turned out – it tasted almost like a tropical refresher, and I could barely taste the alcohol. Think lemon drop martini meets matcha coconut water health drink.
Perfect for a daytime party, a self-care night in, or your next event’s signature cocktail, this coconut matcha martini is a fun, crowd-pleasing drink. One sip, and you might just forget espresso martinis ever existed 😉.

Why You’ll Love this Coconut Matcha Martini:
- Light and Refreshing: Coconut water, lemon juice, and matcha combine for a crisp, clean flavor that’s delicious and easy to drink. It’s perfect for lovers of light citrus cocktails like a Tom Collins or Lemon Drop Martini.
- Energizing, Without the Jitters: Matcha offers a smooth caffeine boost with calming L-theanine, making it an amazing alternative to heavier coffee cocktails.
- Easy to Drink: The touch of simple syrup softens the earthy matcha and tart lemon, creating a super smooth, easygoing martini — even for those who usually shy away from alcohol-forward drinks.
- Tropical Wellness Vibes: The coconut water brings a subtle, beachy flavor (and bonus hydration) without making the drink heavy or creamy.
- Gorgeous Color: That vibrant green matcha hue looks incredible in a martini or coupe glass — perfect for impressing guests.
Ingredients:
- Brown Sugar (for simple syrup)
- Hot Water (near boiling)
- Vodka
- Triple Sec
- Coconut Water (Go with a premium, not from concentrate variety. I LOVE Coaqua Coconut Water – it is subtly sweet and ultra-fresh).
- 1 Lemon
- 1 Packet Matcha powder (approx 1 tsp)

Supplies:
- Cocktail Shaker
- Cocktail Jigger (1.5 oz / 0.75 oz preferred)
- Martini Glass
- 2 glasses or bowls (for making matcha and simple syrup)
- Matcha whisk, or handheld milk frother (this is what I used)
- Spoon
How to Make a Refreshing Coconut Matcha Martini:
1. Make simple syrup.
Make the simple syrup by mixing 1 tbsp sugar with 1 tbsp boiling hot water (you can add a little more water if it’s not enough). The sugar should dissolve quite easily into a smooth syrup if you just swish the liquid around, or stir using a spoon.
Also, make sure to pop your martini glass into the freezer to get a frozen glass (if desired).

2. Make a matcha shot.
Set aside a little bit of matcha powder (for garnish).
In a cup or bowl, whisk your powdered matcha with 0.75 oz of boiling hot water, and 0.75 oz of coconut water. Make sure the matcha water is smooth with minimal clumps of powder. I used an electric handheld milk frother, but you can also use a matcha whisk, or make do with a regular kitchen whisk. I’ve made it work with a fork before as well, lol.

3. Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker.
Fill 1/3 of your cocktail shaker with ice. Add the 1.5 oz of vodka, 0.75 oz of triple sec, 0.5 oz of lemon juice, 0.5 oz of simple syrup, remaining 1.5 oz of coconut juice, and of course, the matcha shot.
I used a 1.5 oz and 0.75 oz cocktail jigger, so for the 0.5 oz measurements, I just eyeballed it and put slightly less than the full 0.75 oz jigger quantity.

4. Shake and pour.
Put the top of the cocktail shaker on, and shake HARD for 1 to 2 minutes, until you see condensation on the cocktail shaker. And then shake some more (this should give you the nice, white frothy foam layer on top of the martini).
Take the cap off the cocktail shaker, and pour into your nice frozen martini glass.

5. Garnish and serve.
Garnish by sprinkling the leftover bit of matcha powder you put aside on top of your martini, with a spoon. Now you’re ready to enjoy a DELICIOUS, zesty, coconut matcha-tini 💚. Cheers!
